Imus Heritage Park, a reminder of the Battle of Alapan and our National Flag

The Imus Heritage Park in Alapan, Imus, Cavite brandishes a large Philippine flag fixed on a 90-foot flagpole which commemorates the first time our country's flag has been hurled in victory after the last of the Spanish colonial forces in the country has been defeated last May 28, 1898. This is over the Philippine victory on the Battle of Alapan that paved the way to Philippine Independence.

The First Jose Rizal Monument

Nielson Airfield - what is now an ultra urbanized business district

Have you ever wondered that 68 years ago, Nielson Airfield is the first commercial airport in Asia? Built last 1937 and has been immensely destroyed during the Battle of Manila on World War II last March 1945. Unknown to most of us, a once military and commercial airfield is now a bustling ultra urbanized city in the Philippines. 

What remains of this airfield is a solitary building which was once an air operations office in a middle of a park amidst high-rise buildings. This location is now far from being an airport.

115th Philippine Independence Message: On Nationalism

On the 115th anniversary of the Philippine Independence, Schadow1 Expeditions would like to send a simple message to my countrymen and fellow travelers and mapping advocates.

I am writing this article right where the final battle between the last surge of Spanish colonizers in the Philippines and Philippine Revolutionary soldiers have met in a fierce battle that led to our identity, our citizenry... being called as Filipinos. The Neglected Andres Bonifacio Shrine

As we head on before our Mt. Pico De Loro climb, we managed to have a side trek at Mt. Nagpatong at Maragondon, Cavite where the Andres Bonifacio Shrine is located. This site is where the 2 Bonifacio brothers including Andres Bonifacio was executed by the Emilio Aguinaldo administration for the act of "treason" amidst his contribution to the downfall of the Spanish colonization via his KKK which is none-the-less a political move.

It is a single-day holiday and is the 114th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence from Spanish rule and declaration of the first Philippine Republic by the Magdalo faction of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. I've been reading the stories of the Philippine Independence when I was young and have only read them in history books over 2 decades ago and it is just the right time to check out these locations and rediscover my national identity.
