Sandbars are one of the sought-after and picturesque tourist sites in the Philippines. Normally characterized with a fine white sand emerging mid-sea or extending out of an island that reveals itself during low tide. Sometimes they are also called shoals, but a sandbar is specifically made up of sand. The best thing about the Philippines, being an archipelago composed over 7,400 islands, is that there are thousands of sandbars and pristine beaches. Sariaya is one of the top municipalities in the province of Quezon and is bounded by Mt. Banahaw at north and a beach at its south. It is a populated municipality and an old locality that thrives even during the Spanish colonial era. A time when the Aurora and Quezon province are just one called Tayabas. And due to its history, the town is filled with old architecture that mirrors its past.

Coming from a mapping expedition and a feeding outreach for the children of Jomalig Island, we headed back to Real, Quezon via a passenger boat from Patnanungan Island. Amidst Lamon Bay's turquoise waters is a heart-breaking reality. To our surprise, the boat is not only overloaded with people but are loaded with large plastic bags filled with the treasures of Lamon Bay. The bags are filled with various species of tropical fishes meant to be sold to pet stores, all bound to Real, Quezon. The question is, is it legal to catch tropical fishes at Lamon Bay?

Jomalig, pronounced as ho-ma-lig', is the farthest and easternmost island of the Polilio Group of Islands of Eastern Luzon which is primarily flat. Of which the highest elevation of the island would be at Alog Point at only 30MASL. Jomalig is a 5th class municipality and its main source of income is fishing and copra. Unknown to many, this island is a hidden paradise of golden beaches and pink sunsets.

Jomalig Island is a remote island of Quezon province. Too remote that it already borders with the Pacific Ocean; requires three hours land travel from Manila and an additional six hours boat ride from Real, Quezon while facing the challenge of strong waves coming from the ocean. As such, this island has become a point of concern of James Betia of Journeying James for his feeding project and Schadow1 Expeditions' Mapping Project. Jomalig Island is a remote island at the eastern part of Luzon, frequently battered by waves and easterlies (habagat) especially during the typhoon season. This island has pristine white beaches however because it is located very far from the mainland, the inhabitants have problems to which its children needs your help.

Conquering Mt. Cristobal 1470+ MASL

Mt. Cristobal is one of the towering mountains of Quezon, bordered by two provinces namely Laguna and Quezon. It is a dormant volcano and is known to be one of the challenging climbs in the Philippines due its forested trails, continuous 9-kilometer assault varying from 60 to 90 degrees inclination. And this climb happened to be the first major climb of Schadow1 Expeditions for its mapping advocacy.

Bicol Roadtrip

It is early morning of December 27. I almost had no sleep yet for at least two nights due to the Christmas celebration, the outreach program and the Talamitam climb last 26th. And the excitement which entails the upcoming Bicol roadtrip adds to it. Then dawn of the 27th came. 3:00 A.M., wake up time. By 4:00 AM, It is time to hop on to the accelerator and start the 516-km x 2 of road ahead of us to discover for the first time what Bicol can offer us.
